Nutanix community Edition inside VMware ESXi



Nutanix Community Edition is a free version of Nutanix AOS, which is powered by Nutanix enterprise cloud system. This is designed for the engineers interested in dev, test and POC purpose.

Download Nutanix from the link and follow the below tutorial


  • CPU Intel CPUs, 4 cores minimum, with VT-x support
  • More than 16 GB RAM required for proper functioning.
  • Networking Intel NICs 1g is enough
  • Hot Tier (SSD) One SSD per server minimum, ≥ 200GB per server
  • Cold Tier (HDD) One HDD per server minimum, ≥ 500GB per server
  • One server for single mode cluster
  • for multimode cluster required minimum three or more.
  • ESXi or VMware workstation with hybrid disks
  • Internet connectivity for the first time
  • Nutanix Next account with log on credentials.

Nutanix CE VMDK Files

once you download the Nutanix CE package from the community page or above link,

It will download as a tar.gz file. Extract this file.

The file that is extracted will end in an .img extension. Rename this file to a .vmdk extension. this is 8GB file it may be different for new versio.

This is the flat VMDK to work with ESXi So we need to add a descriptor VMDK file.

just rename the file to ce-flat.vmdk. For the -flat.vmdk file to be recognized,you can use below disk descriptor content and Rename that file to ce.vmdk with below content.

Upload the files to VMware ESXi datastore. Make a directory for the VM and upload those two files there.

Install Nested Nutanix CE in VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0 or later.

Use VMware Web client to create New VM with existing Virtual drive.

Click New Virtual Machine.

Choose a name and folder for the nested Nutanix CE VM.

Enter the unique Name of the VM and select the folder in the datacenter.

Select the compute resource CPU,RAM,HDD in your vSphere environment for Nutanix CE nested installation

Choose a datastore. The two disks are required for the Nutanix CE installation need to be at a minimum 500 GB for HDD and 200 GB for SSD.

Select the latest compatible version for better enhancement.

Select the Guest OS as Linux.

Customize the VM for nested CPU feature and enable Hardware virtulization

Add Two Virtual disk one from SSD datastore and other from HDD datastore,It can be local.

Select Virtual Network

Make Sur eto add new SATA controller for the virtual disk.

 Add New Device > Existing Hard Disk.

Browse and choose the Nutanix CE VMDK on your datastore.

Finish the wizard

Click VM option and updtae bios firmware to start with VM

Select the SATA drive for booting.

Click f0

Power on the Nutanix CE VM and you should see the VM boot Nutanix for installation.

Once the VM is booted, on the login screen, enter the install user and hit ENTER. Install is default username for configuration with no password.

This will launch the Nutanix Community Edition Installer. Choose your location and then choose Proceed.

You will see new Virtual DISK. click on Procced.

Enter the following Network details.

  • Nutanix AHV Host IP, Subnet, and gw
  • Nutanix CVM IP, Subnet, and gw
  • Create single-node cluster ,for multinode require 3 nodes
  • DNS Server
  • Accept the EULA

Installation of the Nutanix hypervisor begins.

The CVM is provisioned and the installer waits for it to successfully boot.

Logging into Nutanix CE Prism Interface

Enter the CVM IP address in browser https://<your CVM IP>:9440 and login to the PRISM interface.

Default user and password:

  • admin
  • nutanix/4u ————————- small

This will immediately prompt you for a password change.

After changing your admin password, login to the interface.

Internet connection is required for Verifying Next credentials

Make Sure internet access is given to cluster

Once this is registered you can use this setup to test Nutanix.
